A SHORT HISTORY OF NFL FOOTBALL

Ah, the storied rivalries of the NFL—where helmets clash, fans roar, and allegiances run deeper than a well-dug end zone. Buckle up, my friend, because we’re about to dive into some gridiron history that’ll make your heart race faster than a wide receiver sprinting for the goal line! The Birth of the NFL: From APFA to Gridiron Glory The Roaring Twenties and the APFA 🏈The NFL’s roots trace back to the early 1920s when professional football was a scrappy, regional affair. In 1920, a group of team owners met in Canton, Ohio, and formed the American Professional Football Association (APFA). Ten teams from four states—Ohio, Indiana,(the team from Indiana played in 1919, with a record of 4-1-1).  Unfortunately the OHIO representatives wanted to form a new professional league.  The Indiana team played only one game losing to the Illinois Rock Island Independents 45-0.  This game and the Columbus Panhandles – Dayton Triangles, were the first two games played in the new league.  As for the Flyers, they were relegated to playing local teams.  The Ohio teams refused to play them with the excuse they wanted to play “better teams” and cancelled all games with the Flyers.   NO player from the Flyers were were listed on the 1920 “All Star” and no player has been enshrined in the Hall Of Fame.  INJUSTICE! I think so, and this should be rectified for no other reason than being the FIRST PRO team to play the game.  (Just for your information the Flyers HC: was KEN HUFFMAN Home Field was WALNUT STREET STADIUM. The other team; not previously mentioned were the Cleveland Tigers. Teams making up the league were from Ohio were Akron, Cleveland,Canton, and Dayton. Indiana were the Muncie Flyers, Hammond Pros.  New York Jeffersons.  Illinois Rock Island Independents,  Decatur Staleys, and Racine Cardinals. On September 17, 1920 the The Ohio group re-organized. Illinois, and New York—joined forces. Jim Thorpe, the legendary athlete, served as the league’s first president The Birth of a Pigskin Empire The Roaring Twenties and the NFL’s Humble Beginnings Back in the 1920s, when flappers were flapping and jazz was jazzing, a group of football enthusiasts decided it was high time to organize professional football. They gathered in a Hupmobile dealership (yes, you read that right) in Canton, Ohio, and thus, the NFL was born. It was like the Big Bang, but with more shoulder pads and fewer cosmic rays. The original teams were a colorful bunch: the Akron Pros, the Decatur Staleys (who later became the Chicago Bears), and the Dayton Triangles (because nothing says “football” like geometry). These early squads played in cow pastures, city parks, and any patch of grass large enough to accommodate a scrum. Imagine a bunch of burly dudes chasing a leather ball while dodging cows. It was like a real-life version of “Madden NFL: Barnyard Edition.” The Name Change and the NFL Emerges Two years later, in 1922, the APFA rebranded itself as the National Football League (NFL). The name change reflected the league’s growing ambition and national reach. The NFL aimed to establish itself as the premier professional football organization in the United States. The original teams included familiar names like the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants. The Early Years: Leather Helmets and Grit The NFL’s early years were marked by gritty games played on muddy fields. Leather helmets, woolen uniforms, and a no-nonsense attitude defined the era. Teams crisscrossed the country, playing in small stadiums and sometimes even on baseball fields. The league faced financial challenges, but it persevered. The Rise of the NFL Championship Game In 1933, the NFL introduced the playoff system, culminating in the NFL Championship Game. This annual showdown determined the league champion. The Chicago Bears, led by the legendary George Halas, dominated the early years, winning several titles. The Green Bay Packers, with their iconic coach Vince Lombardi, also left an indelible mark on NFL history. The Merger with the AFL The 1960s brought significant changes. The American Football League (AFL) emerged as a rival to the NFL. The two leagues engaged in fierce competition for players and fans. However, in 1966, they decided to merge, creating the modern NFL. The Super Bowl, which pits the champions of each conference against each other, became the pinnacle of professional football. The Super Bowl Era and Beyond The Super Bowl transformed the NFL into a cultural phenomenon. From Joe Namath’s guarantee in Super Bowl III to Tom Brady’s multiple championships, the game became a spectacle watched by millions worldwide. The league expanded, adding new teams like the Seattle Seahawks and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Innovations like instant replay and free agency shaped the game. Today: A Global Sporting Empire Fast-forward to today, and the NFL stands as a global sporting empire. The league boasts 32 teams, each with its passionate fan base. Stars like Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Donald, and Lamar Jackson electrify stadiums and screens. The NFL’s commitment to social justice initiatives, player safety, and community engagement continues to evolve. The Great Depression and the NFL’s Survival Dance The 1930s weren’t all moonshine and swing music. The Great Depression hit the NFL harder than a linebacker blitz. Teams folded faster than origami cranes in a windstorm. But a few resilient franchises soldiered on. The Green Bay Packers, led by the legendary Curly Lambeau, kept the flame alive. Meanwhile, the New York Giants were like the Gatsby of football, throwing extravagant parties (and passes) in the Big Apple. World War II and the NFL’s Patriotic Huddle When World War II rolled around, the NFL faced a dilemma: Should they keep playing while the world was at war? The answer was a resounding “Yes!” Football became a symbol of American resilience. Players traded their helmets for helmets (the military kind) and went off to fight. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Rams moved to Los Angeles, presumably to catch some rays and work on their tan lines between games. The Swinging Sixties and the NFL’s Pop Culture Blitz… Continue reading A SHORT HISTORY OF NFL FOOTBALL

What can I say about last week “DISASTEROUS” Going back to my spreadsheet and see if I can find something that changed.  So many bad picks in last couple of weeks.  Sure hope I find a problem there.   We think we found the problem.  Some how one column had a multiplier missing.  Not all rows were affected but most were.  Don’t know how that happened.   So with that being said LET US see if we can be back on track this week.  For those of you who are new here. This is how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT).  The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game.  EXAMPLE:  Say this week we have 16 games.  The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 16 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1.   You add up the TOTAL CORRECT PICKS.. That would be your score.  We use the Monday night (Last game played) as a TIE BREAKER.  The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. YOU can adopt the scoring  described above.  Or, the optional method.  A  negative score for missed games.  We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions.  EXAMPLE:   if you scored     1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pts on the second game and lost you would still have  1 pt. 1.  HOWEVER. with the same scenario new scoring system would result with a –14 score If we were playing this is how my sheet would look;  My pick will be in bold Capital letters.  you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting.  I will show my correct points in Bold I will fill in my picks Thursday.  Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use.  Or to see if you can beat me. CHOOSING THE RIGHT GOLF GRIPS FOR SENIOR GOLFERS

[adrotate group=”1″] Golf is a game of precision and skill, and having the right equipment can make all the difference. One of the most critical components of a golfer’s gear is the grip. It’s the only point of contact between the player and the club, so choosing the right grip is essential for optimal performance. In this blog post, we’ll explore the different golf grip sizes, materials, their advantages, how to choose the proper grip, and recommendations for senior golfers. Golf Grip Sizes Golf grips come in various sizes to accommodate different hand sizes and preferences. The most common sizes are: Undersize: Best for players with smaller hands or those who prefer a thinner grip. Standard: Suitable for most golfers, providing a balance between comfort and control. Midsize: Offers a larger diameter for players with larger hands or those who prefer a thicker grip. Jumbo: Also known as oversized grips, these are ideal for players with very large hands or those who need reduced grip pressure, often recommended for senior golfers. Golf Grip Materials Grips are made from several materials, each offering unique benefits: Rubber: Durable and provides a soft, comfortable feel. It absorbs more vibration during the swing, which can help reduce hand fatigue. Corded: Features a cord material woven into the rubber, offering enhanced traction in all weather conditions. It’s ideal for players with sweaty hands or those who play in humid climates. Wrap: Typically made from leather or synthetic materials that mimic leather’s feel. They provide good traction and are effective at absorbing moisture1. Advantages of Each Material Rubber Grips: They are versatile and work well in most conditions. They offer a good balance of comfort and traction. Corded Grips: The best choice for wet conditions or for golfers whose hands sweat a lot. They provide excellent grip stability. Wrap Grips: Offer a classic, traditional feel. They are preferred by players looking for a softer grip that provides good moisture absorption. How to Choose the Proper Golf Grip Choosing the right grip involves considering your hand size, the climate you play in, and personal preference. Here’s a general guideline: Measure Your Hand: Use a ruler to measure from the crease of your wrist to the tip of your longest finger. This measurement will help determine the appropriate grip size. Consider Your Glove Size: Your golf glove size can also be a good indicator of the grip size you should use. Test Different Grips: If possible, try out different grip sizes and materials to see what feels most comfortable and provides the best control. Consult a Professional: A club fitter or golf professional can provide valuable advice and help you find the grip that suits your game best. Recommendations for Senior Golfers Senior golfers often benefit from grips that offer comfort and reduce strain on the joints. Oversized grips are generally recommended as they require less grip pressure, which can alleviate pain from conditions like arthritis. Some of the best grips for seniors include: SuperStroke Traxion Tour Oversized Grip: Provides optimal traction and balances grip pressure. Winn Excel Wrap Oversize Golf Grip: Offers a tacky feel and is comfortable for golfers with weaker hands. Golf Pride CP2 Jumbo Golf Grips: A premium option that provides excellent control and comfort. In conclusion, the right golf grip can significantly impact your game. It’s worth taking the time to find a grip that fits your hands and suits your playing style, especially for senior golfers who may need a grip that accommodates physical limitations. Remember, the goal is to find a grip that allows you to swing the club comfortably and confidently. Happy golfing! [adrotate group=”1″] Post Views: 108

The Best Putters for Senior Golfers

[adrotate group=”1″] ⛳Golf is a game of precision and patience, and the right equipment can make a significant difference in performance, especially for senior players. As we age, our playing style and physical capabilities change, necessitating equipment that caters to these changes. One of the most crucial clubs in a golfer’s bag is the putter. For senior golfers, finding the right putter can help maintain a competitive edge and enjoy the game to its fullest. Let’s explore the different styles of putters and some top recommendations. Understanding Putter Styles Putters come in various shapes and sizes, each with unique features that can aid in alignment, control, and feel. The main styles include: Blade Putters: Traditional and straightforward, blade putters are best for players with an arcing putting stroke. Mallet Putters: With a larger head, mallet putters offer more forgiveness and are suitable for a straight-back, straight-through putting stroke. Peripheral-Weighted Putters: These combine elements of both blade and mallet styles, offering a good balance for many players. Top Putter Recommendations for Senior Golfers 1. Odyssey Eleven Triple Track Putter A top choice for seniors, the Odyssey Eleven Triple Track Putter features alignment aids and a forward center of gravity for improved control and consistency1. 2. TaylorMade Spider GT Putter The TaylorMade Spider GT Putter is known for its balance of power and control, making it a favorite among senior players2. 3. Wilson Harmonized M5 Putter For those on a budget, the Wilson Harmonized M5 Putter offers a great value without compromising on quality3. 4. Ping Anser Putter 2023 with PP58 Grip A classic design with modern updates, the Ping Anser Putter is a reliable choice for mid-handicappers1. 5. Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft Premier Putter For seniors preferring a blade-style putter, the Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft Premier Putter provides a soft feel and precision2. Factors to Consider When Choosing a Putter When selecting a putter, senior golfers should consider the following factors: Weight: A heavier putter can offer more stability, which is beneficial for seniors with less steady hands. Length: The correct length ensures a comfortable stance and better control. Grip Size: Larger grips can reduce hand tremors and improve comfort. Alignment Features: Visual aids on the putter can help with accuracy, especially for those with vision changes. Conclusion Choosing the right putter is a personal decision that can significantly impact your game. For senior golfers, it’s essential to select a putter that complements their playing style and physical needs. Whether you prefer a blade, mallet, or peripheral-weighted putter, there are excellent options available that offer the forgiveness, control, and alignment assistance needed to keep your game strong. CHOOSING the RIGHT GOLF BALL FOR SENIORS

[adrotate group=”1″] ⛳Golf is a game of finesse and precision, and the right equipment can make a significant difference in your performance on the course. One of the most crucial pieces of equipment is the golf ball itself. With various brands and types available, it can be overwhelming to choose the perfect one, especially for senior golfers who may have different needs compared to their younger counterparts. Brands and Types of Golf Balls When it comes to golf ball brands, there are several reputable names that stand out: Titleist: Known for their Pro V1 and Pro V1x models, Titleist offers balls that provide exceptional distance and spin control1. Callaway: Their Chrome Soft and Supersoft models are designed for a soft feel and increased accuracy2. Bridgestone: Offers the Tour B series, which is engineered to provide a balance of distance and control3. TaylorMade: Known for the TP5 and TP5x models, these balls are built for performance and durability2. Srixon: Provides options like the Z-Star series, which delivers both distance and greenside control4. Each brand offers a range of golf balls that cater to different playing styles and preferences. It’s not just about the brand, though; the construction of the ball is equally important. Golf balls can be categorized based on their construction from two-piece balls, which are great for beginners and offer durability and distance, to multi-layered balls that provide professional-level performance with enhanced spin and feel. Soft vs. Hard Golf Balls for Senior Golfers The debate between soft and hard golf balls is ongoing, but for senior golfers, the choice often comes down to swing speed and personal preference. Softer golf balls generally have a lower compression rating, making them easier to compress with slower swing speeds. This can lead to greater accuracy and a more pleasant feel, especially around the greens56. On the other hand, harder golf balls tend to provide more distance and are better suited for golfers with faster swing speeds5. Advantages of Softer Golf Balls: Better Feel: Softer balls provide a more responsive feel, which can be advantageous for short games and putting7. Increased Spin: They tend to offer higher spin rates, allowing for better control and manipulation of shots8. Advantages of Harder Golf Balls: More Distance: Harder balls are typically designed for maximum distance, which can be beneficial for long drives5. Durability: They often have a more robust construction, making them less prone to scuffs and cuts5. Is the Pro V1 Good for Senior Golfers? The Titleist Pro V1 is a premium golf ball that’s popular among players of all ages, including seniors. It offers a great combination of distance, spin, and feel. However, it’s worth noting that the Pro V1 has a higher compression score, which might not be ideal for seniors with slower swing speeds1. It’s a ball better suited for low handicappers who can take advantage of its performance characteristics. Conclusion Choosing the right golf ball is a personal decision that should be based on your individual playing style and needs. For senior golfers, softer golf balls might provide the comfort and control needed for a more enjoyable game. However, don’t shy away from experimenting with different types to find the perfect match for your game. Remember, the best golf ball is the one that feels right for you and helps you play your best golf.⛳ [adrotate group=”1″] Post Views: 133

DO SENIOR TEES LEVEL the PLAYING FIELD in GOLF?

[adrotate group=”1″]      ⛳Golf is a game that prides itself on being accessible to players of all ages and skill levels.   One of the ways it achieves this is through the use of senior tees, which are designed to compensate for the natural decline in driving distance that comes with age.  But the question remains: do senior tees adequately make up for the competition against younger and middle-aged golfers? The Purpose of Senior Tees Senior tees, also known as forward tees, are positioned closer to the hole compared to the regular tees.  This adjustment is intended to make the game more enjoyable and competitive for older players, who may not hit the ball as far as they once did.   The idea is to equalize the playing field so that senior golfers can compete with younger players on a more even basis.  (Technically speaking, unless you are playing in a USGA event, then the set of tees you play makes no difference. ) Age Is Just a Number While age is often used as a guideline for when a golfer should start using senior tees, it’s not the only factor.  Strength, driver distance, and even external conditions like altitude and wind can influence whether a golfer should move up a tee.  In modern golf, there’s a growing emphasis on adaptability and personal choice, allowing golfers to select the tee that best matches their current abilities.  (Age and handicap are not the only reasons why forward tees exist. Strength and driver distance also play a crucial role in moving up a set of tees. Other outside factors like altitude, humidity, and wind can greatly affect your carry distance off the tee. ) Advantages of Senior Tees The advantages of senior tees are numerous: Leveling the Playing Field:  By reducing the distance to the hole, senior tees allow older golfers to remain competitive. Enhancing Pace of Play:  Shorter distances can lead to faster rounds, benefiting all players on the course. Encouraging Strategy Over Strength:  With less emphasis on driving distance, golfers can focus more on the strategic aspects of their game. The Verdict So, do senior tees adequately compensate for competing against younger and middle-aged golfers?  The answer seems to be a resounding yes.   By allowing senior golfers to play from tees that suit their current game, senior tees help maintain the integrity and inclusiveness of golf. They ensure that the sport can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of age or physical prowess. In conclusion, senior tees are not just a concession to age; they are a testament to golf’s enduring adaptability and its commitment to fair play.  Whether you’re 45 or 75, the tees you choose to play from are a personal decision that can greatly enhance your enjoyment of the game.  So next time you’re on the course, consider which tees will provide you with the most competitive, enjoyable round. After all, golf is a game meant to be enjoyed by all, for a lifetime.⛳ [adrotate group=”1″] Post Views: 112

(Not all athletes, mostly just Basketball and Football players).  Over a 4 year career that totals to $88,000-$288,000.  AND no STUDENT DEBT.  Not a bad deal. However now they make Thousands on NIL.  Some could finish their 4 years as MILLIONAIRES. CONCLUSION: If I had the chance to play a sport I love, get a college degree, and have NO expenses, other than the small things every body has, like dating expenses, an occasional night out. etc. etc.   AND NO STUDENT DEBT.  I would be happy as a lark. It is reported that Iowas Caitlin Clark has an NIL value of $818,000.  Not picking on Ms Clark; she is the one that came up first.  What I read is this is more than 120+ NBA players get.  🏈 🏀 Post Views: 118
