THIS WEEKS TRIVIA: Which team made their FIRST Super Bowl appearance in 2004 at Super Bowl XXXVIII? Unscramble the answer just above the pick sheet For those of you who are new here. This is how confidence ranking goes, let me explain. If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. To obtain the score YOU rank the teams by how confident you are a team will win its game. EXAMPLE: Say this week we have 16 games. The team you are most confident will win you would assign the number 16 and follow down to the team you are least confident in and assign that number 1. You add up the TOTAL CORRECT PICKS.. That would be your score. We use the Monday night (Last game played) as a TIE BREAKER. The tie is broken by the closest to the total (that is the COMBINED score of the two participating teams) final score, without going over. YOU can adopt the scoring described above. Or, the optional method. A negative score for missed games. We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions. EXAMPLE: if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pts on the second game and lost you would still have 1 pt. 1. HOWEVER. with the same scenario new scoring system would result with a –14 score If we were playing this is how my sheet would look; My pick will be in bold Capital letters. you can use circling, underlining, or highlighting. I will show my correct points in Bold I will fill in my picks Thursday. Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use. Or to see if you can beat me. NFL 2021 RULE CHANGES
Jaguars place rookie RB Travis Etienne on season-ending injured reserve with foot injury Welcome to the 101st anniversary of NFL football. It is THAT time of the year again. So with Pre-season upon us I find it is time to update you on the new rules as some pertain only to Pre-season. So here are the ne new rules I know of at this moment. 1. Eliminate overtime in the preseason This one is self-explanatory. Any of the (now) three preseason games that end in a tie score will remain a tie. Previously, overtime rules in the preseason were the same as regular season rules. Regular season overtime will remain untouched, but there will be no overtime in the preseason anymore. 2. Establishes maximum number of players in the “setup zone” during a free kick (kickoff) This is a bit of an unknown rule, but in 2020, teams that received a kick had to have at least eight players lined up in what they called the “setup zone” up until the moment the ball is kicked. For the receiving team, this “setup zone” is the space between 10 yards in front of the teed ball (the restraining line) and 15 yards in front of that. So if the ball is teed up at the 35-yard line (as usual on a kickoff), eight players on the receiving team had to be set up between the opponent’s 45-yard line and their own 40-yard line. Here’s how it looked last year: I assume the other 3 players are deeper as this appears to be an incomplete demo showing the lineups for only the “setup zone” The rule change is simple. Prior to this rule change, eight was the minimum amount of players in this setup zone, but there was no maximum. Now there is a maximum of nine, meaning there needs to be at least two players outside of this zone for the receiving team. Why? Well, the reason is simply listed as “Provides excitement and competition.” The real reason likely has to do with low conversion rates of onside kicks. Previously, teams would crowd this zone with at least 10 players to recover an onside kick. For example: AGAIN: I assume the other player is deeper, (meaning only 1 player is allowed to be deep). as this appears to be an incomplete demo showing the lineups for only the “setup zone” This is now an illegal formation. Two players will have to be beyond the 40-yard line, leaving fewer players on the receiving team to recover an onside kick. 3. Replay officials can now provide certain objective information to on-field officials The NFL didn’t fully adopt a “sky judge” this time around but this was a bit of a compromise. Now the officials in charge of replay can assist on the following new rule applications without the need for a challenge: Possession of the ball Completed or incomplete pass Touching of a loose ball, boundary line, goal line, or end line Spot of the ball/player in relation to sidelines, line of scrimmage line to gain, or goal line Down by contact (when not ruled down on the field) These issues can still be challenged by a team, but now the on-field officials can consult with replay officials if there is a “clear and obvious” issue with the call on the field. 4. Ensure the enforcement of all penalties committed by either team on extra point/two-point conversion attempts This rule simply adds these words to an already existing rule (new part is bolded): If a foul results in a retry, Team A will have the option to enforce the penalty from the spot where it attempted the try (previous spot) or from the yard line for the other try option, the location of which is determined by any previously enforced penalty, if applicable. I believe this simply means they will tack on penalties if they occur on back-to-back try attempts. 5. Add a loss of down to the penalty of a second forward pass Previously, when a team committed a penalty for two forward passes on one play, the enforcement was simply a 5-yard penalty. Now teams will also incur a loss of down for the same penalty, in addition to the 5 yards. This new rule addition also impacts the very rare occasion in which the ball crosses the line of scrimmage, then goes back behind the line of scrimmage, then a forward pass is attempted. That is still illegal, but it will now also incur a loss of down in addition to the 5-yard penalty. 6. JERSEY NUMBER CHANGES! The NFL has limits on what positions can hold what numbers. The main purpose of this is to designate eligible receivers from non-eligible receivers. This year the NFL has loosened those restrictions but kept the eligible/ineligible designations intact. Here are the new legal numbers by position: QB: 1-19 RB: 1-49, 80-89 TE: 1-49, 80-89 WR: 1-49, 80-89 OL: 50-79 DL: 50-79, 90-99 LB: 1-59, 90-99 DB: 1-49 One note on this rule: If a player desires to change numbers for the 2021 season, they will have to personally buy out the remaining stock of their jerseys from distributors, according to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. If they want to change next year, they are not required to do so. This is a long-standing rule in the NFL, and it may cause players to wait a year to change numbers. In addition to these six new rules, the NFL also adopted a new way in which teams will report visits. Here’s the specific language: Post Views: 109
NFL FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING EXPLAINED
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING Allows teams to play their way onto the Sunday night schedule In 2006 the NFL implemented a primetime “flexible scheduling” element on Sundays in Weeks 10-15 and in Week 17. In 2014 that was extended so that games between Weeks 5 and 17 could be affected by flex scheduling. However, only two games may be flexed into Sunday Night between Week 5 and 10. Flexible scheduling ensured quality matchups on Sunday night in those weeks and gave surprise teams a chance to play their way onto primetime. The NBC Sunday night time slot for “flex” weeks lists the game tentatively scheduled for Sunday night. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game will be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights. Just as the six major college football conferences have done for many years, the NFL has the flexibility to move the start times of games on Sundays, using a 12-day notice format. For example, a game scheduled for a Sunday could move from a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff to an 8:15 p.m. start, but the change would be made and announced no later than the prior Tuesday, 12 days prior. Sunday afternoon games, as in the past, can still be moved between 1:00 and 4:05 or 4:25 p.m. ET. In Week 17, in order to ensure a Sunday night game with playoff implications, the decision to move the start time may be made on six days notice. NFL FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING 101 Begins Sunday of Week 5 In effect during Weeks 5-17 Up to 2 games may be flexed into Sunday Night between Weeks 5-10 Only Sunday afternoon games are subject to being moved into the Sunday night window. The game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night during flex weeks will be listed at 8:15 p.m. ET. The majority of games on Sundays will be listed at 1:00 p.m. ET during flex weeks except for games played in Pacific or Mountain Time zones which will be listed at 4:05 or 4:15 p.m. ET. No impact on Thursday, Saturday or Monday night games. The NFL will decide (after consultation with CBS, FOX, NBC) and announce as early as possible the game being played at 8:15 p.m. ET. The announcement will come no later than 12 days prior to the game. The NFL may also announce games moving to 4:05 p.m. ET and 4:25 p.m. ET. Week 17 start time changes could be decided on 6 days notice to ensure a game with playoff implications. The NBC Sunday night time slot in “flex” weeks will list the game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night. Fans and ticket holders must be aware that NFL games in flex weeks are subject to change 12 days in advance (6 days in Week 17) and should plan accordingly. NFL schedules all games. Teams will be informed as soon as they are no longer under consideration or eligible for a move to Sunday night. Post Views: 79

NFL and AFC Championship Week Jan. 24, 2016
This week I will either have 2 teams, 1 team, or 0 teams left. The numbers favor New England and Denver. I am taking Denver, because I believe the NFL wants Manning to have another Super Bowl Win. I am taking Arizona because I think this week is their time. This year I am making a change in the scoring. YOU can adopt the new scoring or continue to use the old scoring. This year we get a negative score for missed games. We will continue to get a positive score for correct predictions. EXAMPLE: LAST YEAR if you scored 1 pt on the first game and you had 15 pt on the second game and was wrong you would still have a Positive 1. HOWEVER. this year the same scenario would result with a -14 score. I will fill in my picks Friday. Until then feel free to: Just copy and paste for your own Fun Pool Use. NFL Conference Play Championships Confidence Picks Jan 18 2015
COMMENTS: Biggest Blown Call.. The reversal of Dez Bryant REVERSAL. I replayed the action numerous times. I had others observe it and we all agreed no doubt he had control. switched hands, stretched to cross line and scored a TD. But apparently scoring a TD is not considered completing a play in the NFL. Then you look at the TD in the College Playoff. Oregon players TD counted. But I can’t understand how he could have had control when he had like one finger touching the end of the ball when crossed the line. Oh well two different games. I know most of you aren’t playing the “pool” any more. What we did when I ran the company pool, was raised the entry fee. AND heavily relied on the Tie Breaker. Enjoy the rest of the season. I don’t care for the “PRO BOWL” so you won’t see any posts on that. But now we are down to the final four. We should be able to see an all out effort by all teams. Hopefully it will be more like the NCAA division 3 (I think it was). VERY,VERY few flags. They let them play. Enjoyed that game immensely. For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. NFL Divisional Playoffs Jan. 10-11,2014. Confidence Picks
We had a fun week this last weekend. We had one very good game. One out of 4, means we had 25% good games, and 75% not so good. I would have to call the Ravens win over the Steelers a surprise. Perhaps not an upset. The Interstate match up of the Bengals, and Colts, came off as I suspected. One would think this would be a big rivalry. From Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, is a mere 112 mile drive. Just a bit over 2 hours apart. But for some reason, that rivalry never seem to materialize.(Just for those who do not know. Lucas Oil Stadium is also 181 miles from Chicago’s Soldiers Field. about a 4 hour drive. I imagine the fans of those two teams would love to see more games between the two….but not very likely. Before the Colts came to town and the Bengals existed “Da Bears” were Indiana’s HOME TEAM). Had Arizona been totally healthy, I little doubt they would have advanced. …..But, that is why I picked Carolina. There was little doubt in anybody’s mind the Cowboys, would triumph over Detroit. Yeah I know some of you will bring up the so-called “CONSPIRACY CALL”. The way I saw the play the on field reversal was the correct call. The only problem was the OFFICIALS failed to talk the call over before announcing it. BUT how about: who was it Dez Bryant? Or some Cowboy went onto the field without a HELMET. That should have been an infraction, but the officials merely told him to go back to the bench. Not only did he not have a helmet, but as far as I was concerned it put a 12th man on the field who was neither entering to play, or leaving after a play. Let me assure you I am not a Cowboys, or Lions fan. Thus that makes me an “IMPARTIAL OBSERVER”. Now we are down to what we call the Elite Eight. Congratulations to all teams who made it this far. For those of you who do not know how confidence ranking goes, let me explain If we were playing an office pool,(which we ARE NOT). The object is to score the most points. Belated Super Bowl Wrap-up
I know it is rather late. I have been busy doing some consulting work. Then discovered had an issue with connection upon my return. So this will be short and sweet. YES!!! Seattle Seahawks with Russell Wilson WON! I wish we had a better game. With the top OFFENSE Vs. The top DEFENSE : We should have had a GREAT game. However as I predicted the difference was the Defensive effort. The Denver Broncos had that one blunder in the opening seconds of the game, which threw them in a tizzy. Between that awkward start and the smothering defense of the Seahawks, The Broncos could not recover. I do wish we had seen better showings by both Peyton Manning, and Montee Ball. But neither got much chance to show their skills. Seahawks defense all over them and every Bronco. Now the question is will we see key players from both or either team take advantage of their success this year, to enhance their PAYCHECK. Unfortunately the day of loyalty is long past. Few players have it. I think Peyton Manning would have taken a pay cut to stay with the Indianapolis Colts. Just one of the few LOYAL players around. Speaking of Mr. Manning: I think he may have another year in him. The question is this: Is the desire still beating in his heart. Little brother, has the Super Bowl bragging rights, but Peyton has all those records. I suppose we will just have to wait and see how this all unfolds. Congratulations to both teams for the exceptional season they put together That Is How I See It. P.S. I know the Daytona NASCAR race is coming up. But After all these years I could care less. I usually just flip through the channels and catch glimpses of it. Mike Helton and the powers behind him have ruined it for me. But we will be having our MARCH MADNESS posts. Look for them. NFL SUPER BOWL XLVIII
It is finally here SUPER BOWL 48 !!!!! Vs SUNDAY 02/02/2014. Kick off is scheduled for 6:25 pm on the FOX. Although the schedule I read states the game on FOX starting at 6:30. So I advise you to tune in early, and be prepared for a later kickoff. Question one Do you enjoy the game, or the party? For some it is more of an excuse for a party. Others just enjoy the game. Some people will only watch to see the commercials, Some watch THE HALFTIME SHOW. And believe it or not there are those who will watch for all of the above. As for me I will watch for the game and my favorite commercial, the BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES. Now for some info: As I said last week DO NOT GO TO NEW YORK TO WATCH THE GAME. Because although the New York Giants play their games there, the actual stadium is not even in the state of New York. The game will be played in EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY. Therefore New York has to cash in on the parties and extra curricular activities. It doesn’t seem right does it. The Giants should actually be called the NEW JERSEY GIANTS. Of course NEW JERSEY probably doesn’t care because the state benefits from the games, refreshments, etc of the games played there. But Imagine this, What would the Illinois residents think if the Chicago Bears were actually played in Gary Indiana. Same thing. Looking at the TV Commercial costs. I read (somewhere, don’t ask me where as I generally read at least 7 newspapers before 10:oo am each day, and check about 5 -6 TV station websites plus whatever else catches my eye), as an average a commercial costs $19,789.80 a second or $593,694.00 for 30 seconds, which come up to $1,187,388.00 a minute. Lets not forget production costs for those commercials. There are approximately 30 minutes of commercials during the game. Given this rough estimates that is $35,652,164.00 for the network. Now remember this does not include the pre game and post game shows. This will be the first OUTDOOR COLD WEATHER Super Bowl, since SUPER BOWL X. The first played on Field Turf, (artificial grass). AND, What I think makes this match up unique it will be the only the SECOND TIME IN 20 YEARS THAT WILL BE A TRUE, (In my estimation), SUPER BOWL, pitting the NUMBER ONE seeds from each conference HEAD TO HEAD. GAME SETUP: Veteran Peyton Manning Vs New Comer Russell Wilson, who in just his Sophomore season has led his team to this Super Bowl. For the DENVER BRONCOS. You will watch the old veteran PEYTON MANNING, in what I believe will be his THIRD Super Bowl appearance. No doubt as to his abilities, or his knowledge. Manning is a true student of the game. I feel sure he (with the aid of the coaching staff), have well prepared his team for this meeting. Going over countless clips of the SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, DEFENSE. Picking up every nuance of the Seattle defense, every tell that may tip off the DEFENSE strategy. Heck he has probably had some input for the DEFENSE as well. But will his experience and knowledge be enough to outscore the SEAHAWKS? For the SEATTLE SEAHAWKS. We find a comparative youngster leading the team. Although his record would be-lie that fact. He has abilities that Manning lacks, but this will be his first Super Bowl, He will have to rely on his coaches to send in the knowledge that Manning has already locked up in his head. Can they, The coaches convey this effectively to Wilson. I am sure they have done their best. Some may question the affect the stage (SUPER BOWL) will have on this young man. Speaking from my own experience, (on a somewhat smaller stage), THE GAME IS THE THING. I never heard the crowd, or even thought about them. I was only playing the game, to win. That is all I had on my mind, never so much as looked at the time clock. The referees will tell me when the game is over, then I can look at the scoreboard all I want. I think this will be how Russell Wilson will see it. Final Analysis: I could be wrong but, I firmly believe the key to this CHAMPIONSHIP GAME will be DEFENSE. Both teams have demonstrated . for the most part exemplary defenses. They have also had spells of fading into the grass, what happened in those times. If both teams bring their DEFENSE and keeps them awake, I am looking for a very good, close game. But I think that is the whole KEY to the game. Too close to really call. On one hand I think Veteran, on the other I am compelled to go with the “Newbie”. As long as we get a SUPER QUALITY game, I suppose it doesn’t much matter. Denver fans won’t agree and Seattle fans won’t agree with me on that. (Notice me stalling). I am like both QB’s. My mind is telling me one thing. My heart another. I will admit here that having attended University of Wisconsin. I have to root for Denver and Montee Ball, and with my respect for Manning. But I did watch the impact that Russell Wilson made in just one year there, of course Montee was there too. Like I said too Close, (still stalling). So let me say Good Luck to Both teams, and their respective fans. And please remember it reflects badly on your team if behave badly, Win, or Lose. So please celebrate like adults, and not like a prison riot. Okay my pick for Super Bowl XLVIII is (drum roll please)………………………………….. .SEATTLE BY 2 That Is How I See It. Post Views: 74
